Having fun with my subjects is all part of it. Even if I don't get the shot
Gavin marshall is an amateau photographer who specialises in wild life, travel and people. Based on a hill country farm on Banks Peninsula east of Christchurch, New Zealand — but he will take any opportunity to travel!
When I'm not taking photos, you'll find me either playing with the grandkids, or high on the hill working with my sheep or travelling the length of New Zealand working in my location catering business.....but there is always a camera in my hand.
Recently, I have combined my love of Banks Peninsula with recording the "old and forgotten buildings" that still exist. It lets me get closer to my roots and connect with my hard working ancestors who lived in a totally different time in New Zealand. Some of the things they did I would never have done. But my thinking is based on my life now and not on the practicalities they faced at the time. In a small way I want to show the younger less patient generation where they have come from and hopefully let them get some understanding of their heritage from my images.
My work focuses on capturing " the perfect moment in time" even above technical excellence and tying all the elements into a story that my viewer can resonate with.
One of the common themes developing in my work is the use of contrasting light. Natural if it works to focus the viewers attention on the subject.Where possible, shots where the light is supplied from a source within the image are interesting to me.
